Planning
ahead
If you
haven’t already, you may wish to think about writing a will that makes
provision for all your family, including the person with Rett syndrome. To
ensure the person with Rett syndrome is financially secure you may need to
set up a trust that provides for them. Discretionary trusts can maximise
entitlement to benefits, protect the long term interests of a disabled
person, and ensure that if they need to go into care, the inheritance may
not be counted as their own money. It is recommended you speak to a
solicitor whose sole remit is wills and trusts. MENCAP have produced two
booklets, ‘A Guide to Making your Will’, and ‘Leaving
Money in Trust’.
