Older Family Carers - Finances

Planning ahead

If you haven’t already, you may wish to think about writing a will that makes provision for all your family, including the person with Rett syndrome. To ensure the person with Rett syndrome is financially secure you may need to set up a trust that provides for them. Discretionary trusts can maximise entitlement to benefits, protect the long term interests of a disabled person, and ensure that if they need to go into care, the inheritance may not be counted as their own money. It is recommended you speak to a solicitor whose sole remit is wills and trusts. MENCAP have produced two booklets, ‘A Guide to Making your Will’, and ‘Leaving Money in Trust’. For copies call Gina Collins on  020 7696 6925  or order via the Mencap Website.
