General Care Tips

This is a selection of tips sent in by parents and carers.  If you have any tips you would like to share, please email us.

Constipation - Pro-biotic yoghurt drinks can a very effective way of relieving constipation. They are also very good for dealing with trapped wind.  However, please check with your GP before administering any new dietary/nutritional supplements.

Constipation and bowel spasms in adults - For those that have had difficulties finding the right solution, here is another suggestion. A parent has recommended Movicol, which seems to have been more effective then Senekot. Also, for bowel spasms, they have found Buscopen to be really effective. Both these medications need to be prescribed by a GP.

Taking Medicine - If you find that despite trying to hide tablets in their favourite food you still can’t get them to swallow, try placing the tablet in a 10cc syringe, fill up with about 5cc of warm water, making sure there is air in the syringe too. Shake the syringe to make sure the tablet has dissolved – and hey presto its ready for you to squirt the fluid into her or his mouth! You can also use a syringe if the medication is in liquid form. For those tablets that don’t easily dissolve, you could try crushing them with a pestle and mortar (easier than using two spoons!) and putting them into fruit flavoured yoghurt).  It's important that you always check with your GP that the medication is suitable for crushing or dissolving before trying the techniques recommended.
