Although the suggestions and recommendations made in answer to the frequently asked questions arise from real queries, they are general and not necessarily appropriate for any one individual. It is always essential to discuss the management of an individual with Rett syndrome with relevant professionals who know the person and their needs.

Can you tell me a little about the various stages described in Rett syndrome and how they might relate to communication aims?

Our girl with Rett syndrome seems to be very passive. Is this typical of people with the syndrome?

We have been under considerable pressure from other professionals and parents to try signing, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) or a communication aid for our pupil with Rett syndrome. Can you advise us?
